Shakespeare’s Pipe (Thursday, July 2, 8:00 PM, $3 cover). Joey Molland is a guitarist and singer who has seen some of the most important history of rock and roll – first hand. His legendary band Badfinger had monster hits such as “Come and Get It,” “Baby Blue,” “No Matter What” and others. The only band (besides the Fab Four) that endured on The Beatles’ Apple Records label, Molland and other Badfinger members were closely associated with many post-Beatles projects including Harrison’s epic All Things Must Pass and the Concert for Bangladesh and Lennon’s classic album Imagine. All of those rock and roll bona fides comes to bear when Joey Molland takes the stage with his band Shakespeare’s Pipe.
Eric Sardinas with opening act Ken Valdez (Saturday, July 11, 9:00 PM, $5 cover). Eric Sardinas displays his reverence for Delta blues stalwarts like Charley Patton, Elmore James and Big Bill Broonzy the way he displays his tattoos – with gusto. The tradition is all there, but Sardinas is not for the weak of soul. His electrified resonator/Dobro thunder is real, raw and wickedly intense. Really real, as evidenced by the company he keeps. Eric's recordings sport guest spots by such intense originals as Hubert Sumlin, Johnny Winter and Honeyboy Edwards. Studio legend Eddie Kramer (who has worked with Hendrix, The Beatles, Led Zep) was on board for Sardinas' Black Pearls, and the range of sounds, from beautiful to threatening, is stunning. His latest is Eric Sardinas and Big Motor, and it’s another intelligent punch up. Visit Eric's website.
Hamilton Loomis (Saturday, July 25, 9:00 PM, $5 cover). Young Texas guitarist Hamilton Loomis was mentored by the late, great Bo Diddley, and Loomis took Bo’s advice of “innovate, don’t imitate” to heart. “If blues, soul and rock can be said to form a triangle, you’ll find Hamilton Loomis right in the center of it,” according to Guitar Player magazine. Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown and Albert Collins were other icons who took Loomis under their wings when the guitarist was just a youngster. This Blind Pig recording artist is well worth seeking out. Visit Hamilton's website.
Hubert Sumlin with Willie “Big Eyes” Smith (Friday, July 31, 9:00 PM, $5 cover). Born in 1931 in Mississippi, Hubert would sneak off to the local juke joint at age 10 to hear Howlin' Wolf through a window. By the early 1960s, guitarist Sumlin joined Howlin' Wolf’s band, touring and playing on incendiary tracks like “Wang Dang Doodle.” Hubert remained with Wolf for over 25 years, and has served as guitarist for others like Muddy Waters and James Cotton. His innovative blues style has influenced countless guitar gods, including Hendrix and Page. Hubert's Grammy-nominated CD About Them Shoes features guest spots by some of his fans like Keith Richards and Eric Clapton. His 2007 performance at Clapton’s Crossroads Festival in Chicago was a tour de force, in a lineup that included Jeff Beck, Robbie Robertson, B.B. King and more. Long time Muddy Waters drummer Willie “Big Eyes” Smith joins in on harmonica and more. Visit Hubert Sumlin's website.
